THE WORM-WOOD

Now the motions of the lights of heaven accounted for the passage of time. For twelve hundred and twenty four seasons the angels did labour, while among the lands of Hithil-y-Hyar and in the clouds they fashioned great cities. And often from the dim halls of the nether-realms came Mutael, who they called Mahat-Amar, but he could not ascend into the heavens. Thus after a time he gathered his armies together, his captains and lieutenants, his demons major, his chiefs of ten, and the whole host of the fallen. And Mahat-Amar appointed a time when the captains of the host would lay siege to the heavens, and told them of it, so they might make siegeworks. And they gathered at the place of the Shepherd Point between the two moons and the gardens of Anwë, and caused Wormu to fall on the fragile lands, tearing them all asunder. And the sun then ceased to shine, and silence covered the skies.
